West Chester

Nestled in the heart of the Brandywine Valley, West Chester is a picturesque and historic community that offers small-town charm with a cosmopolitan flair. The Philadelphia Inquirer called it “one of the world’s most perfect small towns.” Their downtown boasts 83 shops, 59 restaurants, live music, cultural events, street fairs, walking tours, excursion trains, farmers market, and museum exhibits making historic downtown West Chester a must-see when visiting the Brandywine Valley. If you are a history buff, this is a destination for sure. Stroll along brick sidewalks past the building where Abraham Lincoln began his quest for the presidency; where the great African-American folk artist Horace Pippin lived and painted; where America’s preeminent composer Samuel Barber was born and raised and actors Claude Raines and Eva Marie Saint spent their days. And while in town, you can check out the West Chester railroad, one of the oldest in America, for a 90-minute train excursion through the beautiful Chester Creek Valley. Known for its culinary scene, West Chester hosts an annual Chester County restaurant festival, allowing visitors to get a taste of the local favorites.

Within a few blocks of downtown, West Chester University serves the educational needs of 14,000 students. With roots dating back to 1812, WCU has evolved into a comprehensive university that excels in teacher education, business, health, natural and social sciences, music, and the arts.
